Unpopular opinions on The Devil’s Carnival and a word on OTPs:
A couple people told me I should just…go for it, so I’m gonna just go for it. Under a Read More because…well, unpopular opinions. Lengthy ones.
I’m not setting out to badmouth anybody, so…there is that. But here goes.
If you’re a big Scorpion/Painted Doll shipper you might not wanna click, though, I don’t mean to upset anyone. If you do click, please see it through. There is a point I am trying to make, though it might not be obvious right away.
Right straight down to brass tacks - I know that the most popular pairing in the fandom is Scorpion/Painted Doll. It’s all over the place, people love it, people have a lot of feels about it. I can respect that, y’know? It’s okay, people like what they like.
But my unpopular opinion is that I don’t, personally, see them as a pairing.
Yes, they kissed in the movie. Do I think it was sincere? No. It was part of the act, part of testing Tamara. Giving her proof that he was going to be untrue just to see if she would turn tail like she should, turn around her trust problems. It was a test, just like the others. She had to have something to fail, right? She made a show of wanting to kiss John, too. She had a kissing BOOTH. It was part of her schtick. It wasn’t a tender moment between her and Scorpion, it was a show.
Yes, there is that promo pic with the two of them together. But stop and take a good look at it.
She’s very possessive of him, leaning on him…and he’s just kinda going with it. His body language isn’t amorous - it’s bored. He knows it’s just kind of part of her deal, she’s probably just like this with everybody.
Yes, they danced in Prick! Goes the Scorpion’s Tail. They were celebrating his success in his job. Everyone was partying, long and short of it. It wasn’t really personal.
Yes, Marc Senter and Emilie Autumn are friendly on Twitter. But those are the actors. They are not their characters. They’re both friendly people. Hell, Marc Senter has tweeted responses at ME. He’s a sweet guy. They are both sweet people.
TL;DR - I really just…can’t see them as a real pairing, IN MY OPINION. A fling, at the MOST, but…no moreso than she would with anyone else. Sure, they can be shipped, I get why some would, but it’s not really COMPLETELY CANON.
Now let’s make my unpopular opinion even more unpopular, and…kind of the real point of my post.
I ship Scorpion/Tamara.
Hear me out. I know it’s not really stated as canon, not truly (although there is a point that I will make below). But it’s what I like. It’s my preference. I think it’s an interesting dynamic, that it’s sweet, it’s what I LIKE.
Yes, he killed her. It was his JOB. He didn’t even want to show up for work, not really. They had to throw him in a cage because he dodged out for roll call.
In the song “Prick!” there is a line that goes “In their name, let’s drink to true love, where a toad and a scorpion fell/in their name, let’s drink to true love, for true love can break the spell.” Now, what is she talking about? In the real fable, there’s nothing about love. Nothing about a spell, either. Realistically, I know this is probably just a metaphor for Tamara and her sin of trusting too much. But another interpretation of this line could be that maybe love could have saved the both of them. Canon interpretation? No, probably not.
But that’s the kind of world I wanna live in. It might not be canon, but it’s not out of the question, either. But all the same, I’ve been getting…shoved aside. Put down, even. For liking the pairing. That’s not cool.
I do NOT hate on Scorpion/Painted Doll shippers. I don’t! I’m not writing all this to look for a debate. I am writing this so that maybe, just maybe, I can display that I’ve thought about all this, that maybe I have a valid opinion. I wrote all that up there NOT to badmouth shippers, but to show that I’m not shoving the pairing without THINKING about it. It’s not my cup of tea. That’s all. Nothing wrong with other people liking it, but…there’s nothing wrong with me liking Scorpion/Tamara either, is there?
So really, TL;DR all in all….
My OTP is Scorpion/Tamara.
I do not care if you like Scorpion/Painted Doll. More power to you! Having an OTP is great!
BUT.
Please stop making me feel badly about it, or like my opinion is somehow invalid. You can see, I have thought hard about it. I am going to keep drawing them. RPing them. Writing fanfics about them. And I will post them, even if it’s just little islands in the sea of Scorpion/Painted Doll things. Even if my boyfriend is the only one who will back me on this one and RP it out with me.

Heyy I feel you there, yes I rp a Scorpion/Doll ship account but I’m really a kind of multi shipper. I ship Scorpion with all females. Hell my Scorpion has “Cheated” on Doll several times lol
